Turkmenistan 🇹🇲 is an Asian nation that primarily worships Islam. Turkmenistan is one of the most isolated countries in the world.

General censorship[]

Press freedom is ranked among the worst in the world. Pluralism in the media is virtually nonexistent. All media outlets are tightly controlled by the government of Turkmenistan. Journalists critical of the government are often harassed. The Turkmenistan government has almost no transparency whatsoever.

It refuses to release figures for the COVID-19 pandemic (insisting it had zero confirmed COVID-19 cases). As of 16 January 2023, Turkmenistan is the only remaining sovereign country in the world that has not reported any cases of COVID-19.

Ordinary citizens have no access to the World Wide Web. Turkmen citizens can only access websites authorized by the Turkmenet. Websites run by human rights organizations and news agencies are blocked. The anti-government Russian-language online newspaper Хроника Туркменистана (Khronika Turkmenistana) is not accessible within Turkmenistan.
