The Little Mermaid is an animated musical film that was produced by Walt Disney Animation, originally in association with Silver Screen Partners IV. The movie was released theatrically on November 17, 1989. It was censored for later home video releases and this censored version is streamed on Disney+.[1]

Censorship[]

International censorship[]

  • The scene that shows Eric almost marrying a disguised Ursula was modified for the Disney+ release. In the Disney+ version, the priest's knee was digitally removed due to it looking like he had a erection. (This edit was made on LaserDisc and DVD home videos before Disney+ existed.)[2]
  • Early VHS cover art was deemed to look too "phallic" and was modified for the LaserDisc and later releases.[3]

Where to find it uncensored[]

Some early VHS home video media is uncensored. Some unscrupulous sellers on eBay are known to try to sell such tapes to gullible buyers for way above normal market value.[3]
