Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire are 2014 remakes of the 2002 role-playing games Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire that were developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokémon Company in Japan and Nintendo internationally. The video games were released on November 21, 2014 internationally, 12 years after the original release of Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire in Japan, and on November 28, 2014 in Europe.
In October 2024, a data breach, dubbed the "Teraleak", occurred, and tons of assets, pre-release data, beta content, concepts, and scrapped projects relating to Pokémon were leaked. This included changes to content due to rating boards issues and political reasons.
Pre-release censorship[]
- The character Shelly (Izumi in Japan) was planned to show less skin, covering of the circle segment of the slit on the side of her outfit with cloth. This change was never implemented.
- Team Magma's pose was changed to have the hand positioned near their chest to be rolled up into a fist due to the original, which had their hands straight out, being perceived as preparatory movement for a Nazi salute (The posture include two Team Magma grunts standing with their arms pointed diagonally to form an "M" shape).
- The Abandoned Ship from Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire had its name changed to Sea Mauville due to the real life sinking of the MV Sewol in South Korea.
- Additionally, the ship's backstory was altered. A journal entry that alluded to the ship being "cursed" and destined to sink was removed.
Censorship due to the West[]
- Pikachu, Ph.D.'s (Clever Pikachu in Japan) outfit originally was more male-oriented (Cosplay Pikachu [Dress-Up/Clothes-Changing Pikachu in Japan] is a female-only variant of Pikachu). This was changed due to being perceived as male chauvinism.
- Hoopa (Unbound) originally had a protruding part below its waist. This was changed due to being perceived as phallic and obscene.
- The Triathlete trainer (Bicyclist) originally had Poké Balls below his seat. This was removed due to being perceived as phallic and obscene.
- The female Tuber (Inner Tube Girl in Japan) trainer originally had her back facing towards the screen in her official art. This was changed to have her back facing the side due to being perceived as inappropriate for the trainer class (The Tuber [Inner Tube Boy/Girl in Japan] trainer class is comprised of young children in swimsuits).
- The Beauty (Grown-Up Woman in Japan) trainer originally had her left hand extended out and her legs apart from each other in her official art. This was changed to having her left hand touching her chest and her presuming a walking pose due to being perceived as seductive.
- The Free Diver trainer originally had a line above her crotch in the official art. This was removed due to being perceived as accentuating the trainer's crotch.
- The posture was also changed to have the trainer's feet and arms lowered.
- The Minun pattern on the back of the female Delinquent trainer's pants was moved to the back of her shirt due to perceived as accentuating the trainer's buttocks.
- The male player character, Brendan, had his shoes slightly modified due to copyright reasons (Resembled the Puma's Disc sneakers).
- The character Brawley had his shoes slightly modified due to the copyright reasons (Resembled Crocs).
- The Dragon Tamer trainer has his outfit changed due to copyright reasons (Resembled the DC Comics hero Batman).
- The female player character, May:
- In her pre-release concept art had shading below her crotch area. This was never implemented in the official art due to the shading being perceived as accentuating her crotch.
- In her concept art of her wearing her Contest outfit had the shorts under the skirt modified due to being perceived as resembling underwear.
- The character Flannery had the pose she does in her concept art changed due to the original, which has her raising her arm diagonally, being perceived as resembling a Nazi salute.
- The character Tabitha had the pose he does in his concept art slightly modified in the official art due to the original, which had his right hand open instead of balled up, being perceived as alluding to a Nazi salute.
- The character Courtney had her skirt lengthened.
- The character Shelly had a line accentuating her breasts in her concept art. This was never added to the official art for that reason.
- The male Team Aqua Grunt originally had a Poké Ball located on his waist in his concept art. This was never added to the official art due to being perceived as phallic and obscene.
International Censorship[]
- The Game Corner in Mauville City is no longer accessible in the remakes due to the controversy surrounding simulated gambling in Pokémon games that caused all gambling references to be removed from Pokémon games Generation V to onwards.
