How Controversial Persona 5 Scenes Were Changed Outside Japan

Persona 5 is a JRPG video game developed by Atlus' P-Studio. It was published by Atlus (JP, USA) and Deep Sliver (PAL). The video game was first released for the PlayStation 3 and 4 in Japan on September 15, 2016 and in the USA and PAL territories on April 4, 2017.[1]

An enhanced version of the game was released by Sega as Persona 5 Royal for the PS4 on October 31, 2019 in Japan and on March 31, 2020 in the USA and PAL territories. On October 21, 2022, ports of Persona 5 Royal were released by Sega for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, the Xbox Series X/S, and Windows via Steam and the Microsoft Store.[2]

International censorship[]

  • Scenes involving two gay men hitting on a male party member have been edited so they aren't "portrayed in a negative light".[3]
  • In the Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC ports, the Rising Sun symbol was removed.
  • In the Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC ports, the Raidou Kuzunoha costumes DLC was not made available. The DLC was also delisted from PlayStation stores on October 15, 2022.[4] It is speculated that is because Raidou's costume resembles a mid-20th century (Taisho period) Imperial Japanese Army uniform.

South Korean censorship[]

  • The Rising Sun symbol was removed from the game.[5]

Where to find it uncensored[]

Every version of the original Persona 5 game (except for the South Korean release) is uncensored. For the Persona 5: Royal version, only the Japanese release is uncensored. The Raidou Kuzunoha costumes DLC can be restored via mods for the PC release.[6]
