Persona 2 (Series) Censorship - Censored Gaming Ft. Gnoggin

Persona 2: Innocent Sin (ペルソナ２ 罪) is a JRPG video game developed and published by Atlus. The video game was first released for the original PlayStation in Japan on June 24, 1999. A remake for the game was released by Atlus for the PSP on April 14, 2011 in Japan, on September 20, 2011 in the USA, and on November 4, 2011 in PAL territories.

• The game's original release was not translated into English, despite Atlus being interested in localizing the title, due to the game's storyline involving Nazis and the ressurrection of Adolf Hitler, as well fighting the protagonist's principal and a teacher in the game committing suicide. However, the issues with Nazi references and suicide was actually used as a cover for a true reason; Innocent Sin may have been localized had it not been at the time of Columbine High School massacre (in which happened at the same year the game was released), but the characters can be equipped with guns.

• The American and European versions never got the dungeon creator and DLC quests from the Japanese version, so they can only play two DLC quests that already come with the game itself.
• Many text changes that aren't in the Japanese version.
• Anna smoking a cigarette in Club Zodiac is removed in all versions of the PSP remaster.
• Direct mentions of homosexual nature are removed, although implications of these are not.
• All references to Nazis were censored and renamed. This includes:
  • Hitler was renamed to Führer (which translates from German to "leader"), now wears a pair of sunglasses, and had his uniform covered by a coat.
  • All Swastikas were removed and replaced with a different symbol.
  • Nazis were completely replaced in the game's script to just mention the Last Battalion organization.

Where to find it uncensored

Every version of the PSP remake including the Japanese version is censored. Atlus has never commented as to why the remake was censored, but it is commonly speculated that these changes were made both to prepare for an American/European localization, as well as the CERO ratings board having a rule in which they prohibit the use of historical, real-life people and organizations in fictional media.

The original Japanese release of the game for PS1 is uncensored, but there is currently no official way to play Persona 2: Innocent Sin in English uncensored. There is an unofficial and uncensored English translation patch for the PS1 version of Persona 2: Innocent Sin.
