Between 1979 and 2003, Saddam Hussein's Ba'athist party was the sole legal party in Iraq. Under Ba'athist rule, political criticism or dissent of the Iraqi government was illegal.

State propaganda was the norm under Ba'athist Iraq.

Self-censorship is prevalent in Iraq, including in the Kurdistan region.

Journalists struggle to defend their rights. In Kurdistan, critical journalists received espionage accusations and even imprisoned.

Movie censorship[]

  • South Park: Bigger, Long and Uncut - this film was banned during the Ba'athist regime for its mocking depiction of Saddam Hussein.
  • American Sniper - this film was banned for being "offensive to the population".
  • Lightyear - this film was banned due to a brief lesbian kiss scene.
