The Disinformation Governance Board is a board set up within the Department of Homeland Security, a branch of the United States government. The board was going to be headed by Nina Jankowicz but was paused.
It was established on April 26, 2022 during the presidency of Joseph R. Biden, probably in response to Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter. Musk's purchase of Twitter has angered leftists on Twitter, and he even received death threats.
According to Politico, the Disinformation Governance Board was intended to "coordinate countering misinformation related to homeland security, focused specifically on irregular migration and Russia."[1]
The creation of the board has received substantial bipartisan criticism, especially from conservatives, believing it will stifle free speech protections granted by the First Amendment. Some even compared it to the Ministry of Truth. Former member of Congress Tulsi Gabbard talked to Sean Hannity, where she compared it to the Ministry of Truth and exists only in dictatorships.[2]
Due to substantial right-wing backlash and questions on free speech, the Biden administration put a pause to the Disinformation Governance Board effective May 18, 2022 and is now facing dissolution.[3] Robby Soave, an editor of the libertarian Reason magazine, took on The Washington Post's "widely one-sided account" of Jancowicz's fall. According to his article, it was Jancowicz's faulty record that caused the Disinformation Board to not proceed.[4]
