Albania 🇦🇱 is an European country which practices Islam and Christianity. Censorship was pervasive during the Communist regime of Enver Hoxha (1941-1985) and Adi Rama (1985-1991).
General censorship[]
It should be noted that Albania was the most repressed country in Europe and as well one of the isolated countries in the world until the 1990s (in particular under Enver Hoxha's regime). The country followed the Stalinist style, banning everything foreign, banning international travel, outlawing private property and forbidding religion (promoting state atheism in place of Islam and/or Christianity).
Book censorship[]
- Përbindëshi (The Monster) - this novel written by Ismail Kadare was banned in Albania between 1965 and 1990, due to the communist authorities labelling it as "decadent".
Film censorship[]
- Pas vdekjes (After Death) - this black comedy film was banned for ten years in 1980 under the Communist government.
Internet censorship[]
There are no government restrictions on access to the Internet or reports that the government monitors e-mail or Internet chat rooms without appropriate legal authority. The constitution provides for freedom of speech and press, and the government generally respects these rights in practice. However, there are reports that the government and businesses influence and pressure the media. The constitution and law prohibit arbitrary interference with privacy, family, home, or correspondence, and the government generally respects these prohibitions in practice.
As of 2018, sports betting and online gambling are illegal in Albania.
Video game censorship[]
No video games are currently banned in Albania. Some games were banned during the Hoxhaist regime for allegedly promoting capitalist values.
- A few days after the ban of the release of Dead Rising 2's release in Albania, retailer Albagame refused to sell the copies over alleged gambling. In early 2019 Edi Rama, the prime minister, threatened to ban the game after a law was passed by the parliament, banning sports betting.
