Hi,
For my first Blog Post, I'd like to discuss something I've observed for a while now.
When it comes to Movies that are banned in Germany, it appears (to me at least) that they can generally be divided into one of three categories, though these can also overlap sometimes. So, sit back, grab a soft drink of your choice if you like, and let me explain what exactly these categories are:
Nazi Propaganda Films
This should come as no surprise to anyone, but distributing any of these films in their full, original, unaltered forms is illegal. For some of these Movies, there are certain exceptions, like using them for educational purposes. By that I mean, for example, if you are a History Teacher/Professor who intends to do a lecture about Nazi Propaganda, you are allowed to showcase clips from these Movies as examples of how the Nazi Propaganda worked.
2. Older Movies
With "Older Movies" I'm referring specificially to Movies (Mostly Horror and/or Gore) from the late 1940s to the early 1980s whose fixed time on the Index hasn't expired yet. However, I'm rather confident that this Category will become obsolete, sooner or later, as in the 2010s and 2020s, a whole bunch of Movies that once belonged to this Category had their bans lifted, including:
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1978), ban was lifted in 2011.
"The Evil Dead" (1981), ban was lifted in 2016.
"Phantasm" (1979), ban was lifted in 2017
"Dawn of the Dead" (1978), ban was lifted in 2019
"Faces of Death" (1978), ban was lifted in 2022
"Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom" (1975), ban was lifted in 2022.
3. Movies with a unusually High Level of Explicit, Gory Grotesque Violence in Them.
For this one, I feel like the Name already says what this is, so I'll just list some of the Movies that belong to this Category:
"Ichi the Killer" (2001)
"Cannibal" (2006)
"Tokyo Gore Police" (2008), though with this one the Distributor didn't even submit the uncut version to the FSK.
"The Human Centipede" (All Three Movies)
"A Serbian Film" (2010)
"Vomit Gore" (All Instalments)
So yeah, that's all I had to say about this. Hope you had a good read, and see you on the flip side.
